Don't Push Your Personal Taste When Selling

When preparing your home for sale you should try for a look that's fresh and welcoming but not totally taste specific.

You want your home to reflect a comfortable lifestyle and good taste.

This is not the time to promote your personal style choices.

You don't want your decorating to be so influenced by your own personal tastes that it eliminates a bunch of qualified buyers.

Years ago I had a wonderful client who was obsessed with delft blue.

Window coverings, dinner ware, towels, bedding, placemats, vases and even kitchen countertops shouted her love for delft blue.

Her home was spotless and tastefully decorated but the prominence of that special shade of blue made many buyers uncomfortable. It was just too much.

It sounds cold and calculating but you need to take the "home" out of your house when you decide to sell.

The more personal stuff in every room, the less potential buyers can imagine living there.

Put it in storage.

Arrange your furniture and decor items to maximize the use of space. Not to showcase your memorabilia and keepsakes.
